Week 1 (1/14 - 1/18)

Your first reading response is due for class on Wednesday (1/16). Once you've completed the reading assignment, write the following and post it to your own blog: a summary of the Brandt article, an answer to #5 in Questions for Discussion and Journaling (QDJ), an answer to #1 in Applying and Exploring Ideas (AEI), and a paragraph expressing your own opinions about the reading (was it interesting? was it helpful to you? did you learn any new ideas?).

  1. onomic opportunities affect a person’s literacy sponsorship.
    #1 (AEI)
I am the youngest of six children, and all of my siblings are fairly intelligent. We always had a computer and video games. I attended public school as well. I would compare my literacy history to that of Branch’s. My father and school system would have to be my primary literacy sponsors. My father is an electrical engineer and a lawyer; he was constantly educating me as I was growing up. I would say both sponsors taught me morals and values, the difference between right and wrong. The sponsors were more than adequate. I can’t remember ever being denied any literacy access.

The article provided was informative and left me pondering about the advantages different situations present. The examples provided throughout Brandt’s articles gives reasoning behind her thoughts of literacy sponsorship. I found it especially interesting when she compared Branch and Lopez’s literacy sponsors. Some of the details were mundane, including the story about the union worker, Dwayne Lowery, but overall the text was educating.
